About the series:
The series is inspired
by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West. “When
Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher
(Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to
her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in
Coal Valley, a small coalmining town where life is simple, but often
fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and
mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine,
along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion.
The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to
work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most
everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable
Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father
has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to
protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a turn of the century
coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the
ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her
own.
Review:
Everyone’s lives will revolve around a small mining town and
how one “not so “accidental collapse of a mine, will bring them even
closer. As we watch how every character
unfolds, we also learn that any character can switch sides at any point in time
out of desperation or greed.
My favorite character
is Jack because he always brings comic relief when the situation calls for it. Even
though I did find that there is some awkward silences, pauses between
characters, but I believe that is to let the viewer know about the growing
tension that is developing in the scene.
This episode makes it clear that in the old west, there are
villains; there are damsels in distress, crooked officials, and sexism. Even the
women treat the women different from the men. Characters that are key is the Elizabeth
Thatcher who comes from a wealthy family and has fallen for Jack Thorton (a not
so wealthy guy from the small coalmine).
Abigail Stanton is the lady who owns a restaurant and lost her husband
and son in a mining accident.
Great storyline, great for the family, and I think another
tv homerun for Hallmark. Reminds me of, Dr. Quinn Medicine woman
